uPVC Door & Window Repairs — Same Day, From £49, No Call-Out Fee

Your uPVC door is almost never broken — the mechanism inside it is. A failed gearbox, a worn locking strip, a dropped hinge or a seized cylinder can all be replaced individually, in under an hour, for a fraction of the £800–£2,500 a replacement door costs. Any double-glazing firm that quotes you a new door without attempting a repair first is not acting in your interest.

Local 24/7 Locksmith specialises in uPVC door and window repairs across Birmingham, the West Midlands, Telford, the Home Counties and the South West. Our vans carry over 100 gearbox, multipoint strip and cylinder variants covering all major UK systems — Yale, ERA, Maco, GU, Fullex, Mila, Winkhaus, Avocet and Safeware — which is why we complete the vast majority of repairs on the first visit, with no parts ordering and no second appointment. Even where your original mechanism is obsolete, we can retrofit a modern equivalent.

The Most Common uPVC Faults — Explained

Handle Spins or Won’t Lift — Broken Gearbox

If your handle spins freely with no resistance, or lifts but the lock doesn’t respond, the gearbox (the centre case behind the handle) has failed internally. This is the single most common uPVC repair in the UK — gearboxes are wear items that typically fail after 7–15 years of daily use, and seasonal temperature swings accelerate it.

We open the door non-destructively, remove the broken centre case and fit a new gearbox — typically resolved within the hour. With over 100 variants on the van, we match obsolete and discontinued gearboxes that other locksmiths refuse to work on.

Price: from £99 + parts (gearboxes typically £30–£80). Time: under 1 hour.

Door Won’t Lock — Multipoint Mechanism or Alignment

If the hooks, rollers or bolts along your door edge aren’t engaging with the frame, the cause is one of three things: a worn gearbox failing to drive the strip, a damaged multipoint strip itself, or — most often — a dropped door that has put the hooks out of line with the keeps.

We diagnose which it is before replacing anything. A surprising number of “broken mechanism” call-outs are fixed with a hinge adjustment and keep reset alone, at our minimum charge. Where the strip genuinely needs replacing, we carry full-length multipoint mechanisms for all common door heights, and retrofit modern alternatives where originals are discontinued.

Price: alignment from £49 · gearbox from £99 + parts · full strip from £149 + parts.

Door Won’t Lock in Hot or Cold Weather

uPVC expands in heat and contracts in cold. If your door locks fine in spring but jams every heatwave or cold snap, the door is sitting too tight in its frame — and forcing the handle during these periods is what shatters gearboxes. A professional alignment adjusts the door’s position and keep settings to give year-round clearance.

Don’t wait for the weather to change — the underlying misalignment stays, and the next failure is usually the gearbox. Price: from £49.

Dropped Door — Catching, Dragging, Stiff to Lock

A door that catches at the bottom, drags the frame, or needs the handle forced upward before the key will turn has dropped on its hinges. Left unfixed, it destroys the gearbox and strip. We adjust and reset uPVC hinges to realign the door — this is always the first fix we attempt, often the only one needed, and the cheapest job on our price list.

Price: from £49. Time: under 30 minutes.

Door Locked Shut and Won’t Open

If the door won’t open even when unlocked, the gearbox has usually failed in the locked position or the spindle has snapped. Don’t force it, and don’t let a neighbour pry it — that converts a one-part repair into a multi-part one. We open jammed uPVC doors non-destructively, then replace the failed component the same visit.

Price: from £79. Time: usually under 1 hour.

Worn or Failed Cylinder

A cylinder that’s stiff, intermittently refuses the key, or turns without operating the lock needs replacing — a 20-minute job and the cheapest security upgrade you can make. We carry standard and high-security cylinders in all common sizes.

Price: from £49 + parts.

French & Patio Doors

French door multipoint strips, shootbolts, sliding patio rollers, latches and lock mechanisms — all repaired same-day. French doors in the closed position with a failed mechanism are a speciality; we open them without damage.

uPVC Window Repairs

Ground-floor windows are a primary burglary target and a home-insurance compliance point. We repair and replace:

  • Espagnolette locking strips — the full mechanism behind the handle, all major brands and sizes
  • Window handles — replaced with key-locking versions where requested
  • Friction stays (hinges) — restoring a draught-free seal
  • Window cylinders and barrels

Price: from £39 + parts. Most window repairs under 30 minutes each.

Anti-Snap Upgrade — Do It While We’re There

Standard Euro cylinders on older uPVC doors can be snapped in seconds with freely available tools — it’s the most common burglary method on uPVC and composite doors in the UK. While we’re on site for any repair, we’ll upgrade your cylinder to a 3-star TS007 anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-bump unit (Avocet ABS, Brisant Ultion or Mul-T-Lock) for minimal extra cost. This is the grade most insurers now expect.

Price: from £69 + parts as an add-on to any visit.

Why Repair Beats Replacement — The Honest Numbers

The only cases where replacement genuinely wins: a cracked or warped frame, a failed (misted) glass unit you want changed anyway, or a door so old no compatible parts exist — and with 100+ variants and retrofit options on the van, that last one is rarer than the double-glazing industry suggests. If your door truly is beyond repair, we’ll tell you straight and you’ve lost nothing: if we can’t fix it, you don’t pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my uPVC door lock?

The three most common causes are a failed gearbox (the centre case behind the handle), a dropped door putting the hooks out of alignment with the frame keeps, or a worn multipoint strip. A quick test: if the handle spins or flops loosely, it’s the gearbox; if the door drags at the bottom or you have to lift the handle hard, it’s alignment. Either way it’s a same-day repair from £49 — not a new door.

How much does it cost to fix a uPVC door that won’t lock?

A hinge alignment costs from £49, a gearbox replacement from £99 plus parts (gearboxes typically £30–£80), and a full multipoint strip from £149 plus parts. We confirm a fixed total on the phone before travelling. By comparison, the UK average for this work runs £80–£200 — and a new door runs £800+.

How long does a uPVC door repair take?

Most repairs take 30–60 minutes. A hinge adjustment is usually under 30 minutes; a gearbox swap under an hour; a full multipoint strip 1–2 hours. Over 95% of jobs are completed in a single visit because the parts are already on the van.

My handle won’t lift up to lock — is it the handle?

Rarely. A handle that won’t lift almost always indicates a failing gearbox or a door alignment issue, not the handle itself. Forcing it is what finishes the gearbox off — stop using it and call us. If it is just alignment, you’ll pay our minimum £49, not a parts bill.

My uPVC door won’t lock in hot weather — why?

Heat expands the uPVC profile, so a marginally misaligned door binds tight in the frame during warm spells. The fix is a professional realignment of the door and keeps, from £49. Don’t force the handle during a heatwave — that’s how gearboxes shatter.

Can you repair an old door if the mechanism is discontinued?

Yes — this is a speciality. We carry retrofit multipoint strips and gearbox conversions that adapt modern mechanisms to older doors, including systems other locksmiths turn away.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing my uPVC door?

Almost always. The frame and profile last 30+ years; the internal mechanisms are inexpensive wear items. Repair: £49–£199 + parts, done in an hour. Replacement: £800–£2,500 with weeks of lead time. We’ll tell you honestly if yours is the rare genuine replacement case.

Do you repair uPVC windows too?

Yes — espag locking strips, handles, friction-stay hinges and barrels, all major brands, from £39 + parts, usually under 30 minutes per window.
