Composite Door Won’t Lock or Open? Causes and Fixes
Composite doors are now a popular choice for new front doors in Birmingham, especially on newer estates. Inside, they use the same kind of multipoint lock as a uPVC door, so the faults are similar. But composite doors are heavier and react more to the weather, which causes a few problems of their own.
The usual causes
1. The door has swollen or moved with the weather
Composite doors can expand slightly in hot sun and shrink in the cold. A door that locks fine in the morning but is stiff in the afternoon is usually this. Often a small keep adjustment fixes it for good.
2. The door has dropped
Composite doors are heavy, so the hinges take a lot of strain. When the door drops, the hooks catch on the frame and the handle won’t lift.
3. A worn gearbox
If the handle won’t lift even when the door is open, or goes floppy, the gearbox inside has worn. It’s the same repair as on a uPVC door.
4. A basic cylinder
Many new-build composite doors come with an entry-level cylinder. If the key is stiff, or you’re not sure it’s anti-snap, upgrade it to a 3-star cylinder.
What to check yourself
- Try to lock it with the door open. If it works, it’s alignment, not the lock.
- Look for rub marks on the frame where the hooks or rollers catch.
- Don’t force the handle or key — that’s how gearboxes break and keys snap.

Common Questions
Is a composite door lock different from a uPVC one?
The lock inside is usually the same type of multipoint lock, so the repairs are similar. The door itself is heavier and moves more with the weather.
My door is under the fitter’s guarantee. Should I call you?
Check with the fitter first, because a repair by someone else might affect the guarantee. If you’re locked out or can’t lock up at night, call us — we can get you secure.
Can you get me in if it’s stuck locked?
Yes. We use non-destructive entry first, then repair the part that failed.
