uPVC Door Won’t Open? Stuck Locked, Handle Jammed or Key Won’t Turn
A uPVC door that will not open is one of the most stressful lock problems — you are either locked out or locked in. The good news is that it is almost always one failed part inside the door, and a locksmith can usually open it without damaging the door or frame, then fix the cause on the same visit.

Why a uPVC Door Gets Stuck Shut
1. The gearbox has failed in the locked position
The gearbox is the case behind the handle that drives every hook and bolt along the door edge. When it breaks while the door is locked, the handle goes floppy or will not move, and the hooks stay engaged in the frame. This is the most common reason a uPVC door will not open.
2. The door has dropped and the hooks are jammed
If the door has sagged on its hinges, the hooks can bind against the keeps on the frame. The key may turn partially, or the handle feels solid and will not go down.
3. The cylinder has failed
A worn or broken Euro cylinder can stop the key turning at all, or let it spin without moving the lock. Sometimes the cam inside the cylinder has snapped.
4. A snapped key is still in the lock
If part of a key has broken off inside the cylinder, nothing will turn until it is extracted. See our broken key extraction service.
What to Try Before You Call
- Take the weight off the door. Lift the handle up firmly while pushing or pulling the door towards the frame, then try the key. If the door has dropped, this can line the hooks up again.
- Try the key gently in both directions. Do not force it — a snapped key makes the job harder.
- Check for another way in or out. A back door or patio door may be on a separate lock.
- Do not drill, prise or kick the door. That turns a £99 repair into a new door.
If none of that works, stop. Forcing a failed gearbox can jam the hooks permanently.
How We Open It and Fix It
We open stuck uPVC doors non-destructively wherever the lock allows, working through the cylinder and mechanism rather than the frame. Once the door is open we replace the failed part — usually the gearbox (from £99 plus parts) or the cylinder (from £49 plus parts) — and realign the door so it does not happen again. We carry the common gearboxes, strips and cylinders on the van, so most doors are opened and repaired on one visit.
Typical Prices
- Opening a stuck door, non-destructive entry — from £49
- Gearbox replacement — from £99 plus parts
- Cylinder replacement — from £49 plus parts (anti-snap 3-star from £69 plus parts)
- Hinge adjustment and realignment — from £49
No call-out fee at any time. Out-of-hours work adds £20–£30 to the labour, and you get a fixed price before we set off. If we cannot fix it, you do not pay.
Frequently Asked Questions — uPVC Door Won’t Open
Why won’t my uPVC door open even though it is unlocked?
Usually the gearbox has failed with the hooks still engaged, or the door has dropped and the hooks are binding on the frame. Lifting the handle firmly while pushing the door can sometimes free it; if not, call a locksmith rather than forcing it.
Can you open a stuck uPVC door without damaging it?
In most cases, yes. We work through the cylinder and locking mechanism rather than the frame, then replace the failed part.
How much does it cost to open and repair a stuck uPVC door?
Opening starts from £49, and a replacement gearbox costs from £99 plus parts. You get a fixed price before we set off.
My uPVC door is stuck locked and I am inside. What should I do?
If there is no other safe way out and it is an emergency, call 999. Otherwise call us — we will open it from outside and fix the cause.
Will the door work properly afterwards?
Yes. We replace the failed part and realign the door so the hooks meet the keeps cleanly. Parts carry a 12-month guarantee and our workmanship is guaranteed for 90 days.
