Anti-Snap Locks and Lock Snapping Explained
Most uPVC and composite front doors in the UK use a Euro cylinder lock — the part your key goes into. Basic Euro cylinders have a weak point, and burglars know it. This guide explains lock snapping and what an anti-snap lock actually does.
What Is Lock Snapping?
A standard Euro cylinder is thinnest at its centre, where the fixing screw passes through. If the cylinder sticks out from the door handle, it can be gripped and forced until it breaks at that point. With half the cylinder gone, the lock can be operated and the door opened. It is fast and quiet, which is why it is one of the most common ways uPVC and composite doors are forced.
How Anti-Snap Cylinders Work
An anti-snap cylinder has a sacrificial section designed to break away at the front if attacked, leaving the locking part of the cylinder intact inside the door. Better cylinders also resist picking, bumping and drilling.
What TS007 Star Ratings Mean
- TS007 1-star cylinder — some protection, but it needs a 2-star security handle alongside it to reach the full standard
- TS007 3-star cylinder — meets the standard on its own, with any handle. This is what we recommend for most front and back doors
- Sold Secure Diamond (SS312) — a separate, demanding test standard; many high-end cylinders carry both
Is Your Lock Snap-Resistant?
- Look at the face of the cylinder for a Kitemark and star symbols
- If there are no markings, assume it is a basic cylinder
- If the cylinder sticks out more than a few millimetres from the handle, it is more vulnerable
What It Costs
We fit 3-star TS007 anti-snap cylinders from £69 plus parts, usually in under 30 minutes, with new keys supplied. There is no call-out fee. It is the single most worthwhile security upgrade on most uPVC and composite doors.
