Why Is My Door Handle Floppy? (uPVC and Composite Doors)
A handle that droops, flops down or spins without doing anything is one of the most common faults on uPVC and composite doors. There are two very different causes, and it is worth knowing which you have before the door fails completely.
Cause 1: A Broken Handle Spring
Most door handles have a spring inside that returns them to horizontal. When it breaks, the handle droops, but the door still locks and unlocks normally. Annoying, but not urgent. The fix is a replacement handle set.
Cause 2: A Failed Gearbox
The gearbox is the metal case inside the door edge, behind the handle. It turns the handle movement into the hooks and bolts moving along the door. When it fails, the handle goes floppy and the locking stops working properly. You may hear a crack as it breaks. You might not be able to lock the door, or worse, not be able to open it.
How to Tell Which You Have
- Open the door so you can see its edge.
- Lift and lower the handle while watching the hooks and bolts on the edge.
- If they move normally, it is probably the handle spring.
- If they do not move, or move only partly, it is the gearbox.
What Not to Do
- Do not keep forcing a floppy handle on a locked door — that can jam the hooks in the frame
- Do not take the door edge apart yourself unless you know the mechanism; the strip runs the full height of the door
- Do not leave a door that will not lock overnight; get it secured
Repair Costs
- Gearbox replacement — from £99 plus parts, usually under an hour
- If the door is stuck shut, opening it non-destructively — from £49
