uPVC Door Handle Won’t Lift to Lock? Causes and Fixes

On a uPVC door, lifting the handle drives a row of hooks, rollers and bolts into the frame. When the handle refuses to go up, or only goes up with a hard shove, something in that system is not lining up. It is rarely the handle itself.

The Three Usual Causes

1. The door has dropped

Over time the hinges wear and the door sags slightly. The hooks then hit the keeps on the frame instead of sliding into them. Signs: the door catches at the bottom, or the handle goes up more easily if you lift or push the door first.

2. The keeps are out of line

The metal keeps on the frame can move, or the door can shift with the seasons. A door that locks fine in winter but fights you in summer is usually expansion in the heat.

3. The gearbox is failing

The gearbox is the case behind the handle. When it starts to wear, the handle feels gritty, stiff or inconsistent, and eventually goes floppy. See why is my door handle floppy?

What You Can Safely Try

  1. With the door open, lift the handle. If it moves freely, the problem is alignment with the frame, not the mechanism.
  2. Close the door, push it firmly towards the frame (or lift it slightly by the handle), then try lifting the handle again.
  3. Check the keeps on the frame for anything loose or bent.

Do not force the handle. Repeatedly forcing it is how a worn gearbox finally breaks — often with the door locked shut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my uPVC door handle go up?
Usually because the door has dropped and the hooks are hitting the keeps, the keeps are out of line, or the gearbox is wearing. If it moves freely with the door open, it is alignment.

Is it safe to keep forcing the handle?
No. Forcing a worn gearbox can break it and leave the door stuck locked.

How much does it cost to fix?
A hinge or keep adjustment starts from £49; a gearbox replacement from £99 plus parts.
