uPVC Door Won’t Lock? Causes and Costs in Birmingham

Most uPVC doors in Birmingham were fitted in the 1990s and 2000s, on everything from Kings Heath terraces to 1930s semis in Hall Green and Acocks Green. At 20 to 30 years old, the locking parts wear out, and the first sign is usually a door that won’t lock, or only locks if you push or lift it hard.

Here’s what usually causes it, what you can safely check yourself, and what each fix costs.

First, a 30-second check

Open the door and try to lock it with the door open: lift the handle and turn the key.

  • It locks fine when open — the lock is OK. The door has dropped or the keeps on the frame are out of line. This is usually the cheapest fix.
  • It won’t lock even when open — the problem is inside the door: usually the gearbox (the part behind the handle) or the cylinder (the part the key goes in).

The usual causes

1. The door has dropped

Hinges wear and the door sags a few millimetres. The hooks and rollers then hit the frame instead of sliding in. You’ll often see rub marks on the frame, or the door catches at the bottom.

2. A worn or broken gearbox

The gearbox turns the handle movement into the locking movement. When it wears, the handle feels stiff, then goes floppy, or won’t lift at all. Forcing it is how most gearboxes finally break.

3. Keeps out of line

The metal keeps on the frame can work loose or shift. A small adjustment lines them back up.

4. A worn cylinder

If the key is stiff, catches, or only turns with jiggling, the cylinder may be on its way out. Swapping it for a 3-star anti-snap cylinder fixes the problem and makes the door harder to break into.

What it costs in Birmingham

These are our prices. There’s no call-out fee, and you get the price before any work starts. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we can give you a fixed price straight away.

  • Dropped door realignment and hinge adjustment — quote by photo (usually the cheapest job)
  • uPVC gearbox repair — from £99 plus parts
  • Full multipoint lock mechanism — from £149 plus parts
  • 3-star anti-snap cylinder — from £69 plus parts

Out-of-hours work costs a little more. We tell you the full price before we start, and if you decide not to go ahead, there’s nothing to pay.

What not to do

  • Don’t keep forcing the handle up. It can break the gearbox and leave the door stuck locked.
  • Don’t spray oil into the gearbox. A little silicone or PTFE spray on the moving parts on the door edge is fine; thick oil collects dirt.
  • Don’t replace the whole door. A door that won’t lock almost always needs a repair, not a new door.

Common Questions

Can I leave my door unlocked overnight until it’s fixed?
We wouldn’t. Most home insurance won’t pay out if the door wasn’t locked. We cover Birmingham 24/7 and are typically with you in around 30 minutes.

Is it the lock or the door?
Try locking it with the door open. If it locks open but not closed, it’s the door alignment. If it won’t lock open either, it’s the gearbox or cylinder.

How long does the repair take?
A realignment is usually under an hour. A gearbox or cylinder change is usually done in one visit.
